What's the average salary of an assembly engineer with 5 years experience in Malaysia? Someone's convincing me to go there but I'm not sure if I can save enough money if I go there. Is Malaysia paying more than Philippines? Baseline is Assy Engr with 5 years experience in semicon.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, Melina. RM 6K is about PhP 90K. Wow! That's like the salary of a section manager here in the Phils. already. RM 3K or Php 45K savings every month is not bad. Maybe kuripot should start packing his bags now. Wink

Got this off the web:

Quote:
One of the most striking revelations emerging from the EE Times Asia survey is the huge gap in pay between engineers in Asia and those in the West. Six years into the profession and just past the age of 30, an electronics engineer in Asia draws a basic annual salary of about $14,000. In the United States, meanwhile, engineers earn more than $82,900 a year (see the salary chapter for more on U.S. pay scales) — almost six times the Asian salary.

The disparity in wages is not only between East and West. It also divides engineers within the Asia-Pacific area.

In mainland China, an EE earns a median salary of $7,000, about one-third of the $22,700 of his counterpart across the Taiwan Strait and roughly 50 percent below the mean salary for the entire Asia region, $13,500.

The mean salary recorded for the rest of Asia (countries excluding China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan) is about $16,600. That number is skewed by the relatively high pay offered in Singapore, where an engineer earns, on an average, better than $30,000. Salaries in the Philippines, India and Malaysia, the other major nations included in the rest-of-Asia (ROA) segment, are meager in comparison — $7,400, $8,100 and $13,800, respectively.

Conclusion? Go to the US! Twisted Evil

If you look at the data above, pay in Malaysia is almost double the Philippines' pay. So savings of engineers in Malaysia is really big? I heard the houses are not expensive there too.

how could 6k be 90k in pesos? 1 ringgit is only 13 to 14 pesos or around 78k but take note of the taxes and the cost of living, maybe you can save a bit but not that much.[/list]

Hi Stuck in Asia,

Don't be blinded by the disparity between the incomes in the US and Asia. You may earn big in the US but remember you also have to spend a lot there and taxes are also higher. And if you have a family, although elem and hs are free in public schools, colleges are exremely expensive. Besides, if you are in semicon industry, then you are not considering the by-word right now which is outsourcing. All semicon companies are transferring their manuf in asia. There are actually a lot of unemployed engrs there.

The best strategy is to get an expat status (US rate) here in asia then you will be reaping the advantages of both worlds.

Re Malaysia, if you can get an expat status, why not? But if only P90K, why bother. You can easily get it here in the Phils. Doesn't your company give you stock options?

hi Guest!

90K is easy here in the philippines? for managers maybe? for engineers, i dont think so.

our comapny right now is giving us stock options at a higher price than they are vesting, gives us 1% salary increase per year, almost zero(if you are not sipsip), and gives us a lot of lies.

so your 90K figure seems over over exaggerated to the max.

I know a lot will disagree.

Only Amkor engineers does not have a hard time with the 90K figure.

for the others. forget about it.

There are some semicon industries in singapore that do really pays good. but just a word of causion, if you are in the philippines and plans to get there thru agency. Sometimes, you don't get what all you're expecting.
