Some managers are hesitant to let their top performers go, even if this means a greener pasture for the subordinate. This is but natural, but it soon comes to a point that defies reason.

Take the case, for example, of Pedro Bigaytodo (not his real name), a highly-talented, hard-working engineer who signified his interest to transfer to a managerial position. He was the no. 1 candidate, until the sly moves of people who consider him indispensable kept him in tow. He didn't get the promotion, so a less-deserving individual got it instead.

Fair? No, but it happens. Make sure you don't become a victim.

EE,

How can you be sure if this happened to you? The managers will not tell you, right? They will just announce that there is a new manager. In the meantime, the other candidates have no choice but to be an engineer again. Tell me I'm right!

Hi Semicon Girl,

You do have a point, but I happen to know a manager or two who have confided that they've done this before, so this thing really happens. Fortunately for them, most hard-working engineers simply accept their fate and go back to the line, as dutiful as ever.

In my opinion, a manager should only do this if he or she will also promote the engineer. The mere fact that the engineer's looking for another position means that he's already feeling a bit impatient.

Thanks and keep on posting!!!

Dear EE,

This is my first posting here in Semicon Chika. I enjoy reading the postings here.

I'm a new manager in a local electronics company. I agree that some managers try very hard to keep their good people, stunting their growth. But we must not rush to conclude that they do this out of personal agenda.

These are managers; they're paid big bucks to think what would be good for the company in the long run. Sure, one engineer doesn't get promoted, but so what? As long as this will keep the line running smoothly, the effect will be good for the company. Life goes on.

Thank you for letting me share my thoughts.

Yours Truly,

Well, let's be fair in sharing our thoughts here.

Sure there are lots of reasons why managers don't let top performers go for a promotion. It's already been said, one may be an important company goal, and the manager sees that keeping the engineer in his/her current role for the time being would give the organization a better chance meeting it. The manager may have other plans for the promotion in some other time.

The opposite of this has been mentioned, too. The manager may be too dependent on this engineer and that loosing him/her might mean a substantial loss in the manager's pogi image. I agree that we can call these managers chicken. How did they become managers in the first place?

To become a top performer may be a natural talent of a person or a result created by a good manager. Great managers generate great performers and I don't think that great managers will ever be afraid of letting top performers go for a higher position, of course not higher than where they are.

Now, there are also people who are innately talented and can be great performers in any role they play. If these people happen to work for a manager who are "chicken", chances are, they will be victims. It will be all up to them to change their destiny.

Maybe the bigger question now is, why do we have such chicken managers? How did they become managers in the first place? Well, maybe you guys can tell....

Dear Bokyo,

I am interested in the question that you just raised: "How do chickens become managers?" I hope EE puts up a thread for this topic.

Some managers are also great when they were still engineers but become chicken when they held the high position. WHY??? Maybe they are too cautious because they are afaid to lose the power and in effect loosing MILLIONs, $$$$ in the form of stock options and their high salary. So they just dance with what the superior say, these managers even object they just keep the mouth shut although deep inside they know that their boss is wrong . So the victims....poor engineers. They can't feel any movement, no challenge. The effect is pass down to generations when the subordinate becomes the clone of his boss. I actually have observed this. I am watching 5 generations of clones, simultaneously. DISASTER!!!

I agree that this happens but i think for a very good reason. Most, if not all, decisions regarding promotions a well thought of. Sometimes you only think that you are already ready for promotion but your still not in reality. If you were the one who got promoted, I'm sure you will not think that there was/is another one more deserving than you. In reality, there is and most often than not, there will always be. It's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time.
