Our work table top is stainless steel and it's connected to ground with 1M ohm resistor. Why did one auditor recommend to us to use static dissipative table top? Isn't stainless steel with 1M R acceptable?

hello June16,
1M R is acceptable but may not be enough to slow down current. For static dissipative, the R could go up to 1tera-ohm (10 raised to the 12th power).
another point is: stainless steel is highly conductive (quick to charge/discharge) thus a static dissipative (in w/c elec. resistance is between insulative and conductive) surface is preferred to slow down charge dissipation thereby controlling its impact/hazard to chips (and humans too)..
hope this helps.
kind regards,

It all depends on how or where you used the table. If you are using the table for singulated units then it is advisable to have a dissipative mat. If not, then you leave it as it is.
The 1 Mohm resistance is for safety purposes. You can actually connect the table stainless top to ground without any resistor. |
