It has been said before that the 21st century will be owned by Asia. The news below seems to confirm that there are indeed serious efforts on the part of many Asian leaders to really go in this direction. It would be interesting to see how China's tech alliance with India would unfold.

Southeast Asia must be actively involved too. I hope that the Philippine government, for one, would take the right steps and grab a significant piece of the pie, not only in terms of back-end services like call centers, but in high-end software development as well.

China, India: Rule Global Tech?

BANGALORE, India -- China and India should work together to dominate the world's tech industry, bringing together Chinese hardware with Indian software, China's prime minister said Sunday.

On a visit to India's southern technology hub of Bangalore, Premier Wen Jiabao said the two nations should put aside their historic rivalries for the venture and welcome a new "Asian century."

"Cooperation is just like two pagodas, one hardware and one software," Wen said. "Combined, we can take the leadership position in the world. When the particular day comes, it will signify the coming of the Asian century of the IT industry," he said in an address to information technology professionals in Bangalore.

India has gained global repute as a hub of software professionals while China is strong on computer hardware. Both countries' cheap and plentiful labor has undercut the tech industry in America and other Western countries through outsourcing.

Wen appealed to Indian software companies to set up operations in China to tap the Chinese and global markets. He later met scientists and visited the research facilities at the headquarters of the Indian Space Research Organization in Bangalore.

Last year, China became the first Asian power to launch a man into orbit. India has announced ambitions to send an unmanned craft to the moon.

The two countries have been improving ties despite decades of frosty relations and rivalry. China is also a longtime ally and the main supplier of military hardware to Pakistan -- India's archrival.

"I hope and believe that my visit will inject fresh vigor and vitality into relations," Wen said in a statement distributed to reporters after his arrival.

During talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday, the two countries are expected to sign nearly 30 agreements to promote political, economic and cultural ties. China is keen to develop a free trade area with a combined population total of 2 billion, which would make it the largest free trade area in the world. India-China trade reached $13.6 billion in 2004, with India recording a trade surplus of $1.75 billion, Indian Commerce Ministry statistics show.

On other issues, Wen and Singh are expected to discuss the more than 50-year-old border dispute over their 650-mile frontier, parts of which are not demarcated. A border solution is expected during Wen's four-day visit.

Wen is also expected to discuss with Indian authorities the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in India, Chinese officials have said. Police attempted to prevent Tibetan activists, who oppose Beijing's rule in the Himalayan territory, from demonstrating against Wen's visit.

While he was inside the building, a Tibetan youth climbed up a tower and remained perched above Wen's car, throwing flyers and waving the Tibetan flag. He shouted "Free Tibet! Wen Jiabao, you cannot suppress the truth!" Five officers climbed up and arrested him.

On Saturday, police detained two Tibetan leaders to prevent them from organizing demonstrations and prevented 50 Tibetan students from leaving their college hostels to protest, a police officer said.

See, this is what I meant in the other topic. Education is very important. China and India are not rich, but they have many, many PhD's. The Philippines' educational system will be the problem. The few PhD's we have would rather work abroad because of lack of incentives. And our educational system is so low that even call centers are hard to fill up. From what I read, only 5% of the call center applicants get accepted. We really need to educate our children starting yesterday.

This is another company closed by the government inability to controlled the rising oil and power hike, and red tape.

SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) - Integrated Device Technology (NASDAQ: IDTI - news) plans to consolidate its testing operations and outsource a portion of its assembly operations, according to a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing late Thursday.
Under the plan, the company will close its assembly and test facility in Manila, Philippines, and will lay off about 750 employees.

When something like this happens, it's usually due to incompetence of local management, not due to oil price or red tape. Any insider who knows the real scoop on this? Insights please...

Consolidation actually means putting all the operations in the best-managed facility. In this case, the Philippine team probably failed to impress their bosses abroad...

Same! Kahit 3 years nga lang okay na ko: inegosyo yung money good for 1 year, sustento yung remaining money for the next 2 years. That way, by the end of the 2nd year yung negosyo ko pwede na kong isustento indefinitely.

Inside scoop! IDT philippines have better indices than IDT Penang. However, Malaysia have better economy than Philippines. The salary increase in the Philippines is rising unlike in Malaysia there is not much salary increase because the cost of living is not changing.

The exchange rate at Malaysia is peg between RM13-14/USD. When IDT Philippines started exhange rate is around Php~32/USD. Now it is at ~55 and is to unpredictable.

OBTW, the package is 2 months per year of service.

but isn't it that malaysia salaries are higher than pinoy salaries? so it's not salaries. in my opinion, it's the business climate in the phils. and confidence in local management. local mgt is a factor kasi if it's just business climate then all semicon companies would be closed by now. kulang sila siguro sa diskarte at ... konting sipsip.

Maybe because the 10yr free tax is over for them. They intend to transfer somewhere, in Thailand perhaps, to avail again of the free taxes for another ten years. How old is your company here in the Philippines? Malay natin, baka susunod na company pinagtatrabahuan natin.

IDT is 8-9 yr old.

Maybe some of you are right, the closure could be management related.

Btw, management is lead by an expatriate whose specialty is closing down company.

ok na rin yung pagsasara ng idt philippines , dahil mas lalong lumaki salary namin sa mga kumpanya na nag-offer ng trabaho sa amin, it could be just a blessing and disguise , may pera na, na promote pa but the sad truth was that the decision was just due to philippine government economic status and the idtpi's management inefficiency coupled with bad images and absence of trust of the expat leader to filipinos.

Twisted Evil
