Dies with slotted or circular vias are now being used in the industry. Being exposed only to "regular wafers" can anyone shortly discuss these vias? What are they?purpose? difference between the circular and the slotted. when are they needed?

Many Thanks!

Hi girlash,

Vias are metal interconnects used to electrically bridge two metal layers at different planes or levels on the die. As you know, IC’s nowadays can have several metal levels on the die, the patterns of which inevitably criss-cross each other. To prevent them from shorting together, these different metal levels are isolated from each other by dielectric layers.

Some nodes at one level though need to be connected to other nodes at another level. This is where vias are used – to electrically connect two nodes at different metal levels. One way of making such an interconnection is to etch a hole through the dielectric layer, and to fill this hole with the same metal as the upper level metal (usually aluminum or copper) when this is deposited. The shape of the via is therefore determined by the shape of the hole etched for it. Note that some vias use W instead of the upper level metal as its metal ‘plug’.

Regarding ‘slotted’ vias, I’m really not sure what this means. Let’s wait for someone to tell us what they are. I will also try to do a little research.

Thanks and keep on posting!
