One school of thought says that you should stay loyal to one company in order to make it big. Another says that you should jump from one company to another in order to grab as many opportunities as you can. So which one is correct?

FARel Engr,

Neither is correct! Staying long in a company is good but should have a good reason for it. If the signs are telling you that the company is heading nowhere....why should you stay? Being loyal is good. Just make sure that loyalty to yourself and your family should come first! On the other hand, jumping from one company to another is also not good if ,again, there's no reason for it! My father used to tell me, "A tree that didn't have time to grow its roots, will never have a chance to grow at all." (or something like that).

Hi FARel Engr,

I know that we all hate the answer 'It depends', but this will be my answer to this question nonetheless.

If you belong to a company with great opportunities to get promoted, and you know that your style and capability are good enough to carry you up the ladder, and your company is really good to build a career in, then I think that you should stay until you hit the ceiling.

If the company is not that great, or if you feel that you can no longer get promoted, then get out faster than you can say the word 'adieu'. By the way, don't grab any offer that comes your way. The offer should be good and, more importantly, sustainable.

Thanks and keep on posting,
EE

batman and ee,

what u r espousing is false loyalty, nt genuine loyalty. you're only loyal while u get something from d company. genuine loyalty means sticking it out w/ d company thru thick and thin, jst like the older Japanese.

bt i agree with u, always be where d pasture is green.

biz wiz,

You remind me of myself when I was just starting in the corporate world. Give it a few more years....then you'll understand what "genuine loyalty" is.

here's my loyalty ranking:
1. my God
2. my family
3. my country

the reason/s why we are all working in a company are the above priorities...
1. for the greater glory of God
2. for the benefit of my family
3. for the good of the country

others may change the ranks of #2 and 3...it really depends on how you want to prioritize them. loyalty is only for these 3...we dont stay in a company because we are loyal, we stay because we know we can get something better to support our loyalty to the 3...and we jump companies when we see fit, again to support our loyalty to the 3...
bottomline --- there's no such thing as "loyalty to a company".
