we're just beginning to use a field meter for esd build-up monitoring. we get a lot readings from 200 volts to 2000 volts. what is the acceptable voltage for field meter measurement? is 200 volts already bad?

Hello ESD Neophyte,

IMO, a 200V reading using a field meter is not bad, although of course zero reading would be best. We also see a lot of 200V-400V readings in our line. I will not be concerned by a 400V reading but I'll look into it, and something in excess of 600V will prompt me to do some immediate action. A reading of 2000-4000V should send anybody in red alert mode. These are all just based on my experience with our devices. If you have more esd sensitive devices, maybe you shouldn't tolerate readings of 200 V and above.
