An ordinary engineer with a basic salary of less than 50,000 pesos drives into the parking lot in an Isuzu Trooper that costs more than 2X his annual salary. Impossible?

Not anymore, especially in our industry. More and more local companies have started giving generous stock options as incentives to their employees. One company, I heard, even gives some to its operators.
Some companies perform better than others in the stock market, so it's not the number of shares distributed that count, but the grant prices and prevailing stock market values.

Normally this incentive program is confidential in nature, so it's difficult to get information on which companies here in the Philippines give out the best deals.

Thanks,
EE

EE, the question is, which local companies are giving stock options? I've been with my company for 7 years, but I have not heard of this.

Semicon Girl,

This is a very sensitive topic....masarap tuloy pag-usapan! According to my Bat computer Intel, IDT, Amkor, Analog Devices, IDT, Cypress, TI are examples of companies that give stock options to Philippine employees. You will notice that all of these are American companies. If you are currently working in one of these companies, you have to realize that these are given to key employees only. But if you think you deserve to have this incentive, or if you found out that a co-employee has but you know you deserve better....then go to the justice league. Pardon the pun, but I think you know what I mean.

Pero siguro dapat quiet lang tayo, kasi malapit na atang maka-amoy si Joker (B.I.R.) para bawasan pa ang incentive na ito.

Ha-ha-ha...ang galing mo talaga, Batman. BTW, I also heard that Maxim gives stock options. But like you said, not in the open, so really difficult to confirm or deny. If your company doesn't give SO's, then consider moving to one that does. Really makes a big difference.

I am workign for one of those American company's who give SO. However, we are missing it's original power. Not much can be gained now and imagine I got $90.00 grants when our's is at it's peak. What I learned is that we shoudl nto rely on the SO so much, times can not be predicted. Much better if you have an existing handsome take home pay.

Hi Maximus,

One big disadvantage of trasnferring to companies with stock options is the difficulty of moving up. Expect to find the top crowded because of people waiting for their stocks to mature. These people have no intention of leaving their positions because their cheese has not yet been moved.

Its better to look for a company which offers a promising career and of course, a high salary, than make SO as your #1 criteria in looking for a new job.

Spoiled Engr
