Hello there genius people,

Is it possible for untrimmed parts on a leadframe to get damaged by ESD? Some people say 'no' because the leads are connected together. Some people say 'yes' and say that charge and discharge can still happen even if the leads are shorted. What's the real score on this?

Pleeeease, don't answer this with an 'it depends'. I really wanna know the answer to this.

Mr. Suave,

Devices on a leadframe with all leads shorted together will be very difficult to damage by ESD. You know why ... bcos all the leads are at the same potential. You need to charge the whole bulk to a high V and then discharge the whole bulk through another body at a different potential to get some failures. If this is happening to you, then somethin's really really wrong in your setup, man.

However, devices on leadframes or strips wherein the leads have been isolated from each other (such as when the devices are tested unsingulated in strip-form), may be vulnerable to ESD, even under seemingly normal manufacturing conditions. This is where you gotta be careful.

Mr. Suave,

Additional info from Analog Devices related to this taken off the net:

http://www.analog.com/UploadedFiles/Technical_Quality_Papers_/469375813eos_esd_03_paper_1.pdf

If you can't access this, go to Google and type in "Charged Strip Model." This is a good tech paper to learn from.
