Some say the electronics industry might be gone from the Phils 5 years from now. Bt SEIPI projects the local industry to be at 100 billion dollars in 2008. It's nice to hear SEIPI's optimism, bt I hope there are concrete actions to make this come true.

THE PHILIPPINE electronics market remains weak but is seen to improve by the end of 2003, a local organization of semiconductor and electronic firms said.

The Philippine electronics export industry hit 35 billion dollars in 2002, which is a slight improvement from 32 billion dollars in 2001, according to the Semiconductors and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Inc. (Seipi).

The weak US market, the main destination of electronics export products, remains a major factor in dragging businesses down, the industry organization said.

Twenty six percent of electronics exports go to the US, while the rest are divided among Europe (22 percent), Asia (21 percent), Japan (11 percent), Asean (17 percent), and others (3 percent).

Investments in the electronics industry also dropped to 270 million dollars in 2002 from 720 million dollars in 2001.

From January to April of 2003, investments only reached 53 million dollars, Seipi said.

Citing figures from the Bureau of Export and Trade Promotion of the Department of Trade and Industry, Seipi noted that the electronics exports seemed to have shrunk from 2002 versus 2003.

During the first half of 2003, total electronics exports have amounted to 11.25 billion dollars. In 2002, the total was at 24.26 billion dollars, or about 11 percent growth from 2001.

The Philippine electronics industry hopes to end the year with exports amounting to 25.47 billion dollars, or about 5 percent growth from 2002 figures.

By 2004, the local industry is projected to get a 20-percent growth in electronics exports to 30.56 billion dollars.

And eventually in 2008, Seipi aims to grow the export numbers to 100 billion dollars, as it aims to target specific segments in the electronics industry, particularly electronics manufacturing services.

funny how the last post says local semicon will be gone in 5 years, while this post says it will be 400% bigger by then. between the two, i'm sorry to say i believe the first post more. don't you realize that between good and bad predictions, the bad one always happens? the only time a good prediction happens is when everyone thinks it will happen.

Last weekend FPJ has confirmed that he will run for president. Given his incompetence, I'm sure that the problems of the semicon and electronics industry will worsen under him. So it's more likely for the industry to disappear in 5 years than for it to grow to $100 B. As early as now Thailand and even Vietnam are kicking our butts as far as attracting investments goes, not to mention China. If you vote for FPJ, that's a vote for you to lose your job 5 years from now.
