Hello Folks,

Can anyone of you explain what is the difference between Solderability and Solder Heat Resistance test?

Do we need to test both for let's say lead free qualification?

Thanks,

Hi Guest,

Solderability testing determines how well solder will adhere to the leads of the device, while SHRT tests whether the package will be able to withstand the high temperature used in soldering the device. Thus, these tests check for two different things.

Yup - you need both for Pb-free quals. In fact, these two are critical reqts for such quals. Soldy testing is needed to ensure that your Pb-free lead finish process will meet soldy specs. SHRT is needed to ensure that the materials set you used will survive the higher temperature needed by Pb-free soldering processes (peak temp of 260C vs. only 230C for non-Pb-free LF).
