Hi there,

Anyone here have experience with the above mentioned molding compound ?

I am evaluating this compound using the 16 SOIC Narrow as a test vehicle. During molding, we frequently encounter severe gate remains after degating and also the mold cull sticking onto the plunger.

Any advise or insight to this issue is greatly appreciated.

Moldtech,

I have no experience with this type of molding compound. However I have some suggestions (general rule):

1. Gate remains could significantly be reduced with good gate designs. The angle of the gates are typically 45 deg. But a higher angle (maybe 60 deg) are used on special cases. Note that the angle I am mentioning here is the angle from the runners going to the gates. You can also play with the gate opening (width and length) but this is limited by the package size. This should also be relatively easy(and cheaper) because mold cavities are usually designed such that the gates are inserts. Which means you need not replace the whole mold cavities (which are expensive).

2. Mold cull sticking on the plunger. I am assuming that you already tried playing with the plunger follow through. Most mold presses have this capability. Anyway, raising the mold temp would help. This would increase the mold wax to come out and will help the plastic to get ejected easier. This would not only help the cull to be ejected but the packages as well which I think is more important. However be careful with raising the mold temp.

Moldtech,

Though I don't have any experience with Hitachi compounds, I've previously had problems with sticking.

First of all, does Cel 9200H13 have a compatible mold conditioner? The usual problems with the new compounds is that the conditioners have not been able to catch up. You may want to review your mold cleaning and conditioning procedures and probably increase its frequency, this could greatly enhance release of the shot.

For the cull sticking, what's the finish of your plunger/s, matte or mirror? Current trends go for matte finish plungers, the logic here is that mold release agents would be deposited on the valleys and troughs of the matte there by enhancing the release of the cull after every shot.

For degating, does your process employ a degater or is it done manually?
Also, how wide are your mold gates? Manual degating depends greatly on distance between the package and the runner and on the width of the gates and the adhesion index of the molding compound. To be more specific, degating depends on the gate area and how sticky the mold compound is. If you're doing manual degate, there's not much to do.

If you have a degater, you could adjust the cooling time and the tooling distance.
