Hello answer guys,

I'm currently evaluating the feasibility of molecular sieve as an alternative to desiccant clay. Although the material claims to have a higher adsorption rate than clay, the most common use of this material is for alcohols. Is molecular sieve really the latest in the "desiccant" market?

Hi Lukring,

Thanks for posting. Are you having problems with the dessicant you're currently using? If not, what has triggered you to shift to molecular sieves?

Molecular sieves are synthetically produced, so they may be more expensive than clay or gel dessicants. However, you are correct in saying that they have certain advantages in terms of adsorption.

Their unique feature is the uniformity of the size of pore openings in their structure, so selecting the right pore size gives you selectivity in which molecules to adsorb or not.

Another advantage of molecular sieves is their ability to pull in moisture even at high temp (230 C). Clay stops adsorbing at a low temp (50 C) while silica gel will pull in moisture up to 105 C only.

So do you need these advantages? Do you need selective adsorption? Probably not – IC’s are better off with nothing around them. Do you care about adsorption at over 100 deg C? I’m quite sure that this is also a big ‘No’.

Please let us know what advantages you’re trying to consider in your shift to molecular sieves.

Thanks and keep on posting!

actual data show molecular sieves have much higher absorption rate than clay desiccant. based on studies, you may be able to use only half the amount of m.s. in the MBB to achieve same effect as clay desiccant. might still be cheaper for lukring to switch to m.s. unless m.s. costs more than 2X the clay desiccant.
