Hi all, i found this in a news report in IMI's website. Something to make us feel good.

...Welcome to the Philippines-home to one of the richest pools of highly skilled IT and business professionals.
With 643 IT schools and 400 technical schools, and 86 colleges and universities offering computer science and other related programs and turning out an estimated 350,000 graduates every year, the Philippines boasts of a 94 % literacy rate-one of the highest in the world. It also ranks second among 15 Asian countries in terms of training.
The Philippine IT industry has grown over the past 30 years, not only in number, but also in the scope of its offerings.
From a modest US $ 10-million export revenue in 1989, the Philippine IT industry now exports approximately $1-billion in information technology services generated from some 290, 000 skilled professionals. Once considered the "best-kept secret" of global companies, it has grown into an advanced industry capable of providing a broad and highly specialized range of services to different sectors in the local and foreign markets.
Filipino knowledge workers have been working behind the scenes for more than 25 years, providing the technological backbone for some of the biggest international firms. With 5 operational cyberparks and 1,739 registered IT companies all over the country, the Philippines is not only a top contender for the distinction of being the e-services hub of Asia, it is also recognized as a major outsourcing services provider for American, European, and Japanese firms.
U.S. companies, including Oracle, Lotus, IBM, and Microsoft currently dominate the Philippine IT software and services outsourcing industry, holding more than 50 % of the total market share... |

Hi to all Semicon Fareasterners.
We need to keep posting this kind of news. Notwithstanding the current political climate, the said news makes me feel and see the light at the end of the tunnel. The tunnel may be too long but at least we have something to look forward to for our children. The election time is fast approaching. We need to be very careful in selecting our government officials. They should be the ones who will lead us at the end of the tunnel.
Roco for President?? Maybe Gordon for President?? Definitely NO to Lacson, Honasan and Erap!!

Juan Galing,
I heard that some local semicon execs don't like Roco because he is very 'nationalistic' and he might compromise the operations of american semicon companies here. Sayang naman if this is how they think kasi I think Roco can really help this country. Si Gordon OK din. Patay tayong lahat if FPJ will run dahil I'm sure panalo na yan pag nagkampanya siya na nakasuot ng koboy.

Pipol,
Back to the old topic - call centers are becoming big in the Phils now. I read in the news that some companies are hiring by the hundreds to fill the need. I also saw on TV that call centers pay big bucks if you speak good english.
