If I knew how to get promoted, then I wouldn't be posting messages on this forum. I probably would be in the penthouse office of some fancy tower in Makati, drinking coffee. But here I am...

Anyway, based on what I see around me, here's what I think are things I need to get promoted:

1) Political savvy. If you can orchestrate (manipulate is too strong a word) people to do things for you, and collate and publish their results in one brilliant piece of work, then you're on your way to the top. I don't think this is bad, but it is a style disliked by many. Remember, he who brings the bad news is shot, and he who brings the good news is promoted. This is also the reason why political geniuses wouldn't touch bad news with a ten-foot pole, and would rather wait for someone else to resolve these before stepping in again.

2) Good PR to the bosses. I don't mean ass-kissing. I just mean being obedient and respectful to the bosses. Mind you, respect, obedience, and loyalty to the bosses are basic requirements to have a productive and stable organization. If you don't agree with your boss, you can let him know what you think, but at the end of the day you have to do what he tells you. Otherwise, the door is wide open for you, unless of course, his boss is your kumpadre.

3. Intimidating personality, but only towards your peers and people below you. It's not good relationships that will give you the data or information that you need - it's other people's fear of you. Mix # 2 and # 3 to master # 1, and you're king of the corporate world!

Well, did you really think I would mention talent, knowledge, skills, dedication, or hard work in my list? These things are what you need to succeed in entrepreneurship, or running your own business or company. But to get to the top corporate echelons? Unless you're one of the exceptional few, you need 1, 2, and 3 above, believe me.

Dear Anonymous,

I'm sorry I have to disagree with you. I know a lot of people who got promoted because of hard work. I believe that they still outnumber people who got promoted because of politics.

Of course, it is true that there are people who get promoted even if they don't deserve it. These people and the system they benefitted from should not discourage the rest of us from trying to get promoted the traditional way - through hard work and talent.

Best regards,
EE

EE,

I used to be a believer of "hard work and talent" as the key ingredients to getting promoted. But I realized that there are "groups" who are one step ahead and have perfected a "new talent". What anonymous has pointed out are very true...but because they are so good in doing it, sometimes it is not (yet) obvious. But don't let this stop you in doing what you believe in. Rather, just observe and be sensitive. Let me just add that the other characteristic of this kind of people is that they "believe" that what they are doing is "hard work and talent".

Batman.

Batman,

Funny you mentioned that they believe they're doing hard work. If you come to think of it, doing nothing but wait to claim other people's work as yours is really hard work!

What eludes me though is the fact that the senior managers who decided to promote people like these are supposed to be very perceptive. But what do they do? They practically dance on the palms of, well, people like these (to be referred to as PLT's from hereon). They're as if under total hypnotic control of PLT's.

When I become boss, the first thing I'll learn is how to detect PLT's.

Anonymous,

But you see, the PLTs are also existing at the "top levels". The enemy are not Darth Vaders alone....there are also the Dark Emperors!

Just remember, find in your heart not to hate as it will lead to the dark side. Not to say that I am already a Jedi, but one suggestion is to play their game while inside the Death Star. When opportunity comes, leave the Death Star and start a new company.

Batman, Anonymous,

You win. I concede that one can not rely on mere talent and hard work to get promoted. Even in the high tech semicon industry.

You need visibility, which can only be achieved through adequate advertisement of your accomplishments. Akala ng iba kasi ay pagsisipsip ang pagbubuhat ng bangko, pero if you think of it, documentation of work is very important to the success of a company.

Thanks for your posts and keep on posting!

Tingin Langit Pedestriyan (What a name!),

You may not admit you're a Jedi, but you sound like you were once a Jedi. We don't see you, but I feel you lurking in the dark corridors of power, ready to pounce on every ounce of opportunity that will make you one with the 'Dark Lord.' You are one of them! Turn back while you have time!

looking at the other side of the coin....

the PLTs knowing they are not as talented and hardworking as the real ones are so cool in reacting to situation and people. in fact the real ones are the one getting irritated by the situation knowing they are the ones who really know better. and because of this irritation and being piqued, the real ones ending up not so cool in the eyes of the managers who are either PLTs themselves or simply ignoramous of what's really happening right in their noses.

because of the difference in reaction - PLTs being cool and the real ones being hot - the verdict ends up in favor of the PLTs.

so what's the lesson...

it is the 10-90 principle...

10% of our lives is beyond our control, history, had already happened...
90% of our lives is what determines our destiny....and specifically this is what determines whether we get promoted or not!

90% is HOW WE REACT TO SOMETHING OR A GIVEN SITUATION!
This is a bitter pill which i only learned to swallow lately.
Transparency and Flexibility should go hand-in-hand. We cannot be transparent with our reaction always, we have to be flexible.

The PLTs lack of knowledge makes them cool on their approach as they want to get as more information (not knowledge) as possible.
The real ones knowing much much more tries to show-off and this becomes a turn-off.

calmloser,

you hit it on the bullseye. plt’s get promoted coz they look cool under pressure. that’s coz they don’t do the work – they just delegate them and then they try to look and sound like theyre the ones busy. since they don’t do the work, they have no pressure and always look cool.
